Not-So Frequent Flyer Miles

It’s not that I don’t fly, becuse I do. Eli and I were talking about it recently and I reckoned that I’d traveled to destinatoins by air at least 50 times in my life. Of course, much of that was spread out over many years and many airlines. I shudder to think how many miles I would have accumulated if my parents had signed me up when I was little. (Actually, the programs were probably different then, with expiring miles and all that. Oh, well.)

The last several times I’ve flown somewhere interesting, though, I’ve used United. The trip to Europe was booked through them, so I was able to apply the miles I earned to my account, which already has 15K miles. So the next time I fly, I’ll be a Premier member. Spiffy.

This, of course, is nothing compared to what Rob is doing. He has discovered a whole community of people who go to extreme lengths to collect frequent flyer miles. Rob has actually done a number of mileage runs lately, accumulating enough miles to get first class tickets to Barcelona for him and his fianceé on their honeymoon. He saved thousands and thousands of dollars doing it this way; it’s pretty incredible.

I’m certainly not to that level yet, but the idea of being able to use the Executive lounges at airports is pretty appealing. If I move to London, I imagine I’ll be making more 6 000 trips, and things could accumulate rather quickly.
