I got a job!

I’ve been trying to get a job for the last month. Unfortunately, the sort of job I’d be competent at, a technical support or programming position, is not the sort of job that’s easy to get around these parts. :-/

But on Friday, I finally secured a position. I’m going to be working for another arm of the ITS support staff.

It’s time for a pros and cons list.

Pros

  • State job == no state taxes!
  • It’s on campus, so I won’t need to drive to it. This saves money in gas. It also lets me squeeze work time out of the 2 hour breaks I have in the middle of the day
  • My boss, Jim, seems super nice!
  • I’m starting on Tuesday.
  • I’ve worked in the ITS help organization, so I already know much of the process. It won’t take me long to become productive.

Cons

  • I’m starting at $7/hr, a full $2/hr less than I was getting at PC/LAN last year.
  • Because it’s an on campus job, my only chances to work are M-F. I.e. no weekend hours.
  • My class schedule is such that I’m going to need to get up early to be at work. Probably 8 o’clock every day.
  • The first week I’m only going to be able to work on Tuesday and Thursday, since that’s when my mentor (Taylor) will be there.

I’ve done the math, and assuming I’m able to get 20 hours/week I’ll be OK rent-wise. I’ll have a little money left over for food (enough), and I will need to do some odd jobs for spending money.

All in all, I’m very glad things turned out the way they did. I feel dumb for not going to the Help Desk to ask about employment from the start --- I only went down there a week and a half ago, after I’d already been turned down at several places. But what’s done is done. I’m just happy to be employed again!

No state taxes? Are you sure about that one? Hell, I even payed state taxes on my Unemployment Insurance! If that’s not insulting, I don’t know what is...
