Upgrading to WordPress

Aaah, the joy of the GPL. It means I will never have to worry about WordPress changing out from underneath me. Not that I currently run 15 blogs, but hey, I can dream. :-)

In addition to WP having a friendly license, it has tons of pretty themes available. It also has plenty of plugins now; people have solved the MT parity issue quite rapidly. And it’s far more flexible than the old version of MT I was using anyway. I expect to be able to migrate my Song of the Week page to my blog much more easily now.

So here it is, my blog reborn. What do you think of the theme?

I step away for a few months and what happens? Sheesh.

Until I’ve got a blogspam filter of some sort installed, commenting has been disabled.

Freedom from Comment Spam

I got increasingly annoyed by the amount of comment spam I was getting. Today my comment numbers topped 1000, and I knew I had to take action.

I needed a way to quickly ferret out and erase all the spam comments. The solution, which I found six months late, was MT-Blacklist. I have nothing but glowing good things to say about this program. Install was a breeze, running it was dead simple, and it successfully deleted 860 spam comments in a minute.

Behold, the power of regular expressions!

Fixing those &s

Thanks to a post on WaSP, I just installed SafeHref. It should guarantee that my blog validates even if I post links like this.

In other standards news, I just recently finished working on my Dad’s company’s website. Good times there; I got rid of a ton of JS in favor of CSS. This was responsible for almost an order of magnitude decrease in file size, with more possible when they ditch the tables.

At the moment, though, the two unordered lists on the site (excluding the list of navigation links at the top of every page) don’t show their square bullets on IE6/Win. And I don’t know why.

/me became frustrated on that one and gave up

Suggestions would be appreciated, if you figure out what’s wrong.

Backlog

Right, so I’ve been a bit behind. It’s funny how that works. I say to myself, “I’m going to blog about that tonight!” and then I don’t.

So I’ve got a few quick ones that I’ll just jot down here. :-)
